João - The Brain Behind the Game

João Saldanha (1917-1990), former Brazilian soccer player, coach, journalist and polemist, was always a tough guy. The same prowess he showed in the field in his brief tenure as a player led him to take up position as coach for Rio's Botafogo Football Club. Though he had no previous experience, his team won a state championship in 1957. Also known for his harsh criticisms, Saldanha was one of the most feared and controversial soccer broadcasters of his time. Head of the Brazilian soccer team during the 60's, he led the country to win the 1970 World Cup in Mexico when Brazil became three times champion. An activist of the Brazilian Communist Party since the 40's, he was the odd man out of the Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF) during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
